Canon Point: Kingdom Hearts II: Axel's "death"
History: Wiki!
Personality: Axel can be easily separated into two parts: who he pretends to be, and who he actually is. These two parts are very distinct. In canon, you can actually tell by a shift in his tone and use of words as to which part he's tapping into. They are both him, though. The pretend Axel is ruthless, he's a murderer, a liar, he works for himself. He uses this persona in his work, to do the Organization's bidding, and if most prominent in Re: Chain of Memories when he is under orders from his best friend turned superior, Saix. Saix used him as a pawn to take out the rest of the Organization members assigned to Castle Oblivion. Axel played a role in each of their deaths, and even at one point placed a bet with Zexion, another superior, on who would die next, which Axel then won because he helped bring that about. Not that it mattered, since very soon after Axel set Riku's Replica on Zexion, manipulating him into killing the other Nobody and taking his power of illusion.
He is the only Organization member to kill one of his peers himself, murdering his superior, Vexen, with just a span of his fingers, sending flames into the Nobody's body which caused him to fade into darkness. He did it with a smirk and a sarcastic "goodbye" in front of Sora, not caring when the boy yells at him in anguish, asking why he'd do that. As a Nobody, Axel isn't able to care that he killed a member of his own Organization. In fact, he's not supposed to care about anything at all. As the games progress, though, this becomes harder and harder for Axel to do. In 358/2 Days, Axel meets Roxas and Xion, two young Nobodies with no memories of their lives before as Somebodies (which Xion didn't even have). These two make him remember what being a Somebody was like, they tap into the real Axel and make him shine through. My personal favorite scene in all of the Kingdom Hearts games is in Re: COM, Axel is talking to himself, he laughs, then touches his chest where his heart should be and says that he's enjoy this. At that point he hasn't enjoyed anything in all the years since he lost his heart.
This is where the real Axel comes in. This part of him is who he was when he was a Somebody, when he went by the name Lea. Back then, and at the point I'm taking him from, after Roxas and Xion have become his new heart, he's a genuinely nice guy. He has his flaws, yes: he's arrogant, he's lazy, he still is mostly in it for himself, but beyond that he's good. He'll deny that fervently, knowing all the horrible things he's done, but somehow it's harder to fault someone for their past when they're willing to die for love of another person. After following Sora for most of Kingdom Hearts II, trying to tear his heart away again to recreate Roxas, Axel gives up. He sees how important Sora is to the world and instead of using the moment when Sora is surrounded by Dusks, about to be overpowered, to set a Heartless on him and turn him back into a Nobody, Axel steps in and uses up all of his life energy to save him. With his last breath before he fades away, Axel answer Sora's question of "why did you do it?" with simply that he wanted to see Roxas again, that he wanted to save him. Through saving Sora, he saved Roxas, his best friend, the boy who made him feel like he had a heart.
In all, Axel, when he's true to himself, lives for his friends. They're who make him who he is. Whether it's Isa, his childhood best friend, Ventus, an acquaintance with whom he connected his heart at a young age, Roxas and Xion, who unlocked his heart after years of it being captured by the darkness. He can't be himself without someone to tease, to laugh with, and to eat ice cream with. After years of not feeling a thing, only living off of how he thinks he should feel from his memories, following Saix's orders because of loyalty born of a one sided friendship, being able to feel again is the only thing that matters to him.
In Wonderful Worlds, without his memories of Roxas, given up at his price to play the Game, his vague notion of a heart will remember feeling, being happy, being terribly sad, but he won't know why. He won't even remember dying, or telling Sora why, because it won't mean anything to him, not when he doesn't know why he felt that way, or why he felt at all.
Abilities: Axel wields chakrams, a set of two spiked metal circles, each fittingly with eight points around the edges. He uses them like twin boomerangs, tossing them out, usually covered in flames, only for them to return to his hands as if magnetic. When he’s not using them, they are stored in what can be assumed to be the Darkness. When he summons them, they appear in a burst of flames. He can also use various spells, such as ones to cause blizzards or to heal, but fire is his main weapon and he can wield it to great effect. He even has the ability to hold up a wall of fire without breaking a sweat.
He can also summon Portals of Darkness which use Corridors of Darkness to move from one place to another, usually to different worlds, but also within a world.
